A new study has found that men who modify their vehicles to give them a more throaty roar are likely to possess dark personality traits because of their "callous disregard" for others with the act.

Boffins at the University of Western Ontario in Canada set out to understand if there is a connection between noisy cars and dark personality traits.

529 male and female participants were surveyed on whether they wished to have a loud vehicle and also completed an assessment to establish if they had psychopathic tendencies.

It was revealed that men were more likely to desire a loud car and would be willing to use modifiers to make it even noisier and those who said so scored more highly in the dark personality test.

Julie Aitken Schermer, lead author of the research, told CBS: "It seems to be this callous disregard for other people's feelings and their reactions.

"That's the psychopathy coming out and they probably get a kick out of enjoying watching people get startled."
